Eglin Visitor Center - Eglin Air Force Base is located in Okaloosa County, Florida. This area was a national forest until the US Forest Service gave 340,000 acres at the beginning of World War II to Europe and the need for an airport in Florida was recognized. Today, among other roles, the base serves as a test site for air-to-ground nuclear weapons. More than 8,500 Airmen, their families and Defense personnel work and live at Eglin AFB in its 2,300 residences. The 96th Test Wing is Eglin's host unit, while other major units include the 33rd Fighter Wing, 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron, 7th Special Forces Group, 20th Space Control Squadron, and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Eglin AFB is a bit isolated. The nearest major city is Valparaiso, a small town of only 5,000. Pensacola is 60 miles away, and if you're arriving by public transportation, that's probably the hub you'll pass through on the way to the station.

Pensacola Regional Airport is a small airport that serves a handful of major airlines. Flights will come from several major US cities, though your options are limited. You may need to transfer to a connecting flight to get here. Another small airport nearby is Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.

You'll also find a Greyhound bus station in Pensacola, and since Greyhound lines serve most of the country in the United States, this is a great option for you, especially if you're traveling alone. There is also a Greyhound station in Fort Walton Beach.

The financial department is a great resource for Airmen and their families. This is where you can go to learn about general tax liability, how to open a checking account and manage your monthly budget. You can use the resources here to learn about long-term financial planning, such as saving and investing. Everyone has a place to learn how to make their money work for them, and the finance department is the place to do it.

The Law Office is the place to go if you like things big and small. Here they offer a range of services, from notary services to consultation with lawyers. Everyone is welcome to use the services provided here.

The library is basically a great resource for books, movies, board games and more. They participate in the interlibrary loan system. They offer study guides and other resources as well as a library of language services. You can come for printers and wifi.

There are plenty of places to stay around the station that are close enough to provide a comfortable ride. Each town and city close to the source has a unique concept, with different offers and services that should accommodate everyone.

Cities near Eglin include Valparaiso, Niceville, Freeport, DeFuniak Springs, and Crestview. Pensacola, the closest major city to the base, is about an hour's drive away.

Valparaiso is named after a city in Indiana, which is also called Valparaiso, Chile. It is a small town of about 5,000 people. The town was originally built on land discovered by a single entrepreneur named James E. Plew. When he leased a portion of the land to the US government, that land became the original base of Eglin AFB.

Niceville is a city of about 12,000 on Choctawhatchee Bay. It is the site of the annual Boggy Fest, formerly known as the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival. There are a number of schools in or near the city, and many famous ones have grown up or retired.

DeFuniak Springs is the county seat of Walton County, Florida. The city has a population of about 5,000, and is home to one of two freshwater lakes in the area: DeFuniak Lake. DeFuniak Springs was founded in the 1800s as a resort town for Pensacola developers and businessmen and is now home to many businesses and industries.

There are no schools on the Eglin campus, but there are many options in the nearby community. The Okaloosa County School District is nearby and has options for grades K-12, as well as Walton County Schools and Santa Rosa County Schools. There is a child development center in Eglin for daycare and early childhood education and other private options in the area.

Pensacola, like Florida in general, has very low temperatures every year. Summer is long and hot, with a lot of water stress. Cloud cover is high and the clouds release the heaviest rainfall in late July. Winters are short and most of the time stays in moderate temperatures, rarely below 40 degrees.

There is much to see in the Florida Panhandle. Just south of the station is Choctawhatchee Bay, a popular resort town with white sand beaches and resorts. A fun-filled year-round vacation destination. There is an array of cultural activities in the various cities surrounding the base, and a day trip to Pensacola will allow you to explore all that this great metropolitan area has to offer. There are many nearby hiking and camping areas, including a base option, as well as unspoiled natural world views and hiking trails in Florida's wetlands.
